MIJNshop & MIJNcollectie are a shop and fashion collection inspired by the heritage of coal mining in the Netherlands.
During the 1-year long exhibition the Heerlen-based pop-up shop sold clothing and accessories that were designed during the year by designers Linda Friesen, Ebby Port and Gabriel Guevera. The three designers from South Limburg started their collections by diving into the rich coal mine history, each presenting their take on the mining industry and historic miners clothing.
Heerlen forms part of Parkstad Limburg (formerly known as Oostelijke Mijnstreek, or Eastern Mineregion), which was an important centre for the coal mining industry in the Netherlands in the late 19th century. Mine workers came from all over Europe (Italy, Poland, Belgium, Germany, Hungary, Morocco, Spain, Friesland) to work in the state mines, contributing to a viable, and multicultural society. The coal mines located in the South Limburg region were shut down by the Dutch government between 1965 and 1976, which had an enormous social and economical impact on the area.
With M2015 Jaar van de Mijnen (Year of the Mines) Parkstad is celebrating their coal mine heritage with various projects, exhibitions, and events. www.M2015.nl
